Description:

Russ Eanes enjoyed a long career as a publishing executive for the Mennonite church in the U.S. and Canada. With the disruption of the publishing industry and the decline in church membership and attendance, Russ found himself downsizing staff and merging locations until he was exhausted by it, so he downsized himself and took a sabbatical, including a walk on the Camino de Santiago. On that sabbatical, he found a new purpose. He is now publishing the story of his walk and starting a journey of teaching other walkers how to self-publish books chronicling their experiences. The original interview was published in August of 2019 and Marc interviewed Russ again in January of 2021.

Description:

This week I have a great discussion with Glenn Zweig. Glenn provides executive search and leadership advisory services in Egon Zehnder’s Digital, Tech-Enabled Services, and Healthcare practices. He is also the host of the podcast called, The Art of Excellence, where he interviews high-achieving people across all walks of life to find common threads of success.

I wanted Glenn on the show for 2 reasons. The first reason is that he has a deep understanding of the executive search process and I wanted his perspective on what is he looking for when candidates are switching industries. The second reason is he has a great podcast, The Art of Excellence, that is completely separate from what he does as an executive recruiter. Glenn suggests that you need to put yourself out there when pivoting industries and I want you to hear a bit of Glenn’s podcasting story.

Description:

I consider John Tarnoff to be a peer, colleague, and friend. John specializes in helping those in the 2nd half of life reinvent themselves. In 2017, he published his book, Boomer Reinvention: How to Create Your Dream Career.

Let me read you a snippet from his website.

After my startup went bust, I decided to go back to school to earn a Master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology – a branch of behavioral psychology that focuses on self-responsibility and self-forgiveness as pathways to healing and change. I didn't think that I wanted to become a psychologist but I hoped to learn more about myself, what my strengths and weaknesses were, and what lessons I needed to learn to move forward.

Now, fifteen years later, as a career coach, author, and speaker, my mission is to support professionals over fifty to redefine, build and sustain second-act careers beyond traditional retirement. I’ve created a more personal-growth approach to career development, vs the traditional HR skills-based paradigm - starting with the notion that your ideal second-act career is already inside you.

John and I had a frank discussion on what is going on in the job market for the older worker and what we need to do to get through this. We have done this before and we will yet do it again.

Description:

This week, I have a great interview with Sarah Harford. Sarah is a member of the Career Pivot membership community and was recently hired as a virtual patient trainer for a medical device company. By the way, this is a position in a job that didn't exist before COVID.

She had been employed as an occupational therapist in a psychiatric hospital that left her stressed out and really needed a change. I want you to hear her story about her very convoluted journey during the time of COVID. She had lots of opportunities to just give up and stay as an occupational therapist, but she didn't.

In the end, a bit of serendipity happened. More importantly, she was open to it. She landed a position that did not exist before the pandemic and it married multiple skills from being an occupational therapist and from her previous career as a massage therapist. It's a great story I want you to hear and hopefully be inspired by.

Description:

This will be the last podcast episode of 2020 which for many of us has been one dumpster fire of a year. Therefore it is time to plan for 2021 and I have kicked off my annual podcast survey. If you would be to take the survey, I would be most appreciative.

I will be planning out the podcast schedule for 2021 during the month of December and the first half of January, and I would very much appreciate any feedback you can give me.

In this week's episode, I have Diann Wingert from Diann Wingert coaching. Diann is a former licensed therapist and now coaches entrepreneurs. Her tag list "My Jam" is helping others like me be successful in work and life. She also has The Driven Woman podcast.

I know Diann from the Smart Passive Income Pro online community where we both are members. I wanted to finish out the year discussing mindsets. We have all been thrown out of our comfort zones in the last 9 months and I thought this would be a good topic to discuss before the holidays.

The Career Pivot membership mastermind gets mentioned in the article, How to Build a Home Business Support Group, published on NextAvenue.org.

Description:

This will be a short and sweet episode. There will be show notes blog post on the Career Pivot website.

Given the explosion of COVID-19 cases in North America and Europe and the audience who listens to this podcast are largely over 50 years of age I am really concerned about what this next month will bring.

I feel very blessed that I live in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. A little over a week ago we came out of a 2 week lockdown where all businesses were closed on weekends and all businesses closed at 7 PM each weekday.

It has seemed to work as numbers are trending downward and it seems to have encouraged good behavior as it relates to mask-wearing and social distancing. From a personal perspective, this was relatively non-intrusive in most people's lives.

There will be no episode next Monday and I will kick off the annual podcast survey with the next regular episode on December 7th.

I want to wish everyone a very safe and happy thanksgiving from the Repurpose Your Career Podcast and Career Pivot.

Description:

This marks the 4th anniversary of this podcast. I started this podcast in late October of 2016 to support the launch of the 2nd edition of "Repurpose Your Career - A practical guide of the 2nd half of life" which was published in the spring of 2017. I never imagined to be doing this podcast 4 years later and a quarter of a million downloads.

I started 2020 like any other year with a set of guests that I thought would inform and inspire you. Of course, then COVID-19 hit us across the head like a 2 by 4 and I changed focus to topics that I thought you would find helpful in surviving and thriving through this pandemic.

I picked 7 episodes that I will play snippets from and I hope that you will go back and listen to again and again.

These episodes are as follows:

Description:

We normally travel back to Austin every six months to take care of things like renewing the car registration, picking up nutritional products, taking care of some medical stuff, and to do some shopping. We were unable to make the trip back in April when the car registration expired due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

These last few weeks looked like the best time to make a quick trip, take care of important business, and get back to Mexico.

I give you a day by day replay and some of my observations along the way.

Here is the beginning of Hannah's About page:

Hi, I’m Hannah Morgan, aka, Career Sherpa, a nationally recognized author, and speaker, and job search strategist.

What I love doing is helping people understand what actions they need to take to find a job faster. Job hunting is hard work but I follow the trends closely to help get you up and running.

I’ve had my share of unsatisfying jobs and have pivoted from legal assistant to telemarketing, to HR.

My positions in Human Resources, Outplacement Services, Workforce Development, and Career Services, equipped me with a 360 degree perspective on job search topics.

What I’ve learned is that in today’s job search, technology, strategy, and even resume deliverables are morphing rapidly, shifting the way people find and land jobs. The explosive reliance and relevance of social media and online visibility, in general, have radically changed the job search landscape. Your job search needs to be proactive, not reactive.

I think that says it all.
