Description:

In this week’s episode, I am speaking with Richard Eisenberg, who is the former managing editor with Next Avenue. Richard unretired in January of this year and we will be discussing what it means to unretire.

I listened to Richard on The Big Middle podcast a few weeks back and was taken by how well Richard had planned out his unretirement. I should have known this is something he would have done as he has been writing on this topic for years for Money Magazine before later taking on his role as Managing Editor and Money & Work Channels Editor for Next Avenue.

I want you to hear his journey into unretirement.

Description:

In this week’s episode, I am talking about how to mitigate risks. I will give you 4 methods to use when you want to mitigate a risk that you are planning to take. This is a follow-on to episode 273 where I discussed real and perceived risk. If you have not listened to that episode, I would encourage you to go back and listen to that episode first.

Way back in late 2019, before the beginning of the pandemic, the "What’s Next Mastermind" group within the Career Pivot Community, held three sessions about risk. The last one was about how we mitigate risks. From that discussion, I wrote a blog post called, How to Mitigate Risk in the 2nd Half of Life. You will find a link to this in the show notes.

In this episode, I want to take you through the four strategies that we discussed in that session on how you can approach mitigating risk. These are tried and true methods (but something we rarely think about) on how we can mitigate the risks of our actions.

The four strategies are:

  • Avoidance
  • Acceptance
  • Reduction or Control
  • Transference

You can read more about these strategies in the article 4 Effective Risk Mitigation Strategies.

Think about how you have used some of these methods in your life or career to mitigate risks.

Description:

In this week’s episode, I speak with Mike McNatt, a test and compliance engineer who continues to work contract jobs into his 70s. He was introduced to me as the guy who has got this gig work down and that is not working for Uber.

My good friend, Marti Konstant, who is a workplace futurist and career coach, said I needed to have Mike on this podcast. Mike has worked contract engineering jobs and has developed a strategy to stay fully employed.

Mike is an engineer who was interviewed for Forbes called, Working In Tech At Any Age–This Engineer Tells You How. He also produced multiple LinkedIn posts on his strategies which I will include in the show notes.

Back in the 1980s, when I worked for IBM, I helped lead a mechanical design support group. Our internal customers hired a lot of contract engineers for 12-to-24-month contracts. What I learned was they would work a contract, then take a few months off and then find the next. They were completely comfortable with this lifestyle.

Here we are 30-40 years later, and this is a new way of working. Mike has become comfortable with this, and I want you to listen to his story.

Description:

In this week’s episode, I am exploring risk both real and perceived. This is a follow-up discussion I want to have with you. If you have not listened to episode 271 when I interviewed Angie Morgan one of the co-authors of the book, "Bet on You: How to Win with Risk," do that now.

In late 2019, we held 3 sessions in the What’s Next mastermind group around risk.  We first spent time defining what risk means to each of us. We each view risk differently but those who are the most risk-averse are often the ones who society leaves behind.

Like Angie discussed in episode 271, this is not about taking wild risks without understanding the ramifications. It is about taking measured risks.

In this episode, I want to discuss real and perceived risks. Not everything we view as a risk is very risky.

I really want you to reflect on how you have taken or not taken risks in your career and life. Taking risks is part of life. We take risks every day in our lives, like getting in a car, flying in a plane, and now walking into an indoor restaurant and being surrounded by lots of people.

How have you taken risks and mitigated the outcomes?

I will be intermixing solo episodes like this one over the next few months. They will be shorter and to the point. I am trying something different to mix things up.

Description:

This podcast episode is releasing during the US Memorial Day holiday weekend and therefore, I am going to give you a quick update on Career Pivot and the Repurpose Your Career Podcast and then I am going to rebroadcast the most impactful episode for me from 2021 which was How to Switch Industries from Executive Search Consultants Perspective with Glenn Zwieg.

I have reached an interesting point with Career Pivot and this podcast. Traffic to the Career Pivot website declined significantly during 2020 and 2021. However, the downloads for this podcast stayed pretty flat during that same period. In 2022, the monthly downloads for the podcast now are roughly equal to the number of visitors to the website, a little less than 10,000 per month. At one time the website received around 30,000 visitors per month. That changed dramatically during the pandemic.

The podcast is now steadily growing at a significant rate while website traffic is staying pretty flat.

Therefore, this podcast is getting most of my attention. Besides I like recording and producing this podcast as it is the greatest networking tool, I have ever had. I meet so many interesting people.

When I launched Career Pivot way back in 2012, it was a money-making operation. That is no longer true. Since we moved to Mexico in 2018, it has shifted to being a passion project for me. As long as it does not lose money, I am good with that. I like when it makes money because I can do some fun projects and invest in the podcast with the funds the business generates.

Earlier this year, I started publishing this podcast on YouTube not knowing whether it was worth my time. I now have 15 YouTube subscribers and will have to see what it does the rest of the year. Maybe I can be a YouTube influencer … NOT!

Some of that money I am making right now is paying my co-author, Susan Lahey, to help me with some advanced white papers.

Therefore, I ask you to share this podcast in whatever method you prefer. The more people who listen to the podcast, the more people we can help!

Given this is the US Memorial Day weekend, I thought I would rebroadcast the episode from 2021 that had the greatest impact on me. This was my discussion with Glenn Zweig. Glenn provides executive search and leadership advisory services in Egon Zehnder’s Digital, Tech-Enabled Services, and Healthcare practices. He is also the host of the podcast called The Art of Excellence where he interviews high-achieving people across all walks of life to find common threads of success.

I wanted Glenn on the show for 2 reasons. He has a deep understanding of the executive search process and I wanted his perspective on what is he looking for when candidates are switching industries. The second reason is he has a great podcast, The Art of Excellence, that is completely separate from what he does as an executive recruiter. Glenn suggests that you need to put yourself out there when pivoting industries and I want you to hear a bit of Glenn’s podcasting story.

A lot of the ideas I have around how to handle disruption came from this episode.

Description:

In this week’s episode, I interview Angie Morgan one of the co-authors of the book Bet on You: How to Win with Risk. This is one of the best books on risk that I have read and given the uncertain world we live in I thought it was an appropriate topic for this podcast.

Let me read Angie’s about section from her LinkedIn profile:

I learned how to lead during my time as a United States Marine. When I transitioned to the private sector, what surprised me was how the term "leadership" was being used. Whereas in the Marines, leadership was a verb - everyone aspired to lead. In my new world, "leadership" was a noun and only an expectation for managers. This inspired me to write my first book on leadership - "Leading from the Front" - as well as start my business, Lead Star. I've since written two more books - SPARK and Bet on You.

Through Lead Star, I do the work I love. My team and I design programs for professionals around the world that help them understand how they can express leadership in their work environments and in their lives.

If you feel you are risk-averse, which you will hear from Angie that a lot of successful people feel they are, then this is a conversation you need to hear.

Description:

This week's episode is a bit different. I recently returned from a 3 week trip from our home in Ajijic Mexico to Austin where I was a keynote speaker at a financial conference. I spoke to an audience that might have been as many as 700 people. There were 900 people registered for the conference.

My wife and I then flew to Maryland so we could visit our son and daughter-in-law who we had not seen in 2 and a half years due to the pandemic. They had purchased their first home in Annapolis Maryland last year.

We flew Southwest Airlines to BWI on a direct flight both ways right after the mask mandates for airports had been lifted. Both flights were full. If I do not need to get on an airplane ever again, I would be fine with that.

We then returned to Austin to complete our mission. I had a periodontist visit to have my teeth cleaned. I have been going to the same periodontist for 25 years and I still come back a couple times of a year for a checkup and cleaning. I had a fascinating discussion with the hygienist that I want to share.

We then drove to east Texas so my wife could visit with her mother. Her father passed away a couple of months ago and as you can imagine her mother is still grieving.

We then headed back to the Texas/Mexico border on our drive home.

I had so many interesting conversations along the way that I wanted to share my observations in this podcast episode.

Description:

This week I am speaking with Teresa Ghilarducci and Sia Radpour about how the great retirement surge was not associated with the great resignation but by mass job loss by older workers during the pandemic.

Teresa and Sia are both economists with the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy analysis and they recently published a report called No "Great Resignation" for Older Workers—Mass Job Loss Drove the Retirement Surge.

This report confirmed many of our suspicions that the great retirement surge was driven by involuntary job loss and was not by choice.

Teresa’s bio is as follows:

Teresa Ghilarducci is a labor economist and nationally recognized expert in retirement security.

She holds the Irene and Bernard L. Schwartz Chair in economic policy analysis in the Economics Department at the New School for Social Research and directs the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis that focuses on economic policy research and outreach.

Ghilarducci joined The New School in 2008 after 25 years as a professor of economics at the University of Notre Dame. Her most recent book, Rescuing Retirement: A Plan to Guarantee Retirement Security for All Americans, offers solutions to the growing retirement crisis in the U.S.

Sia’s bio is as follows:

Siavash Radpour earned his Ph.D. in economics from the New School for Social Research in 2020. His research focuses on the effects of the retirement system and aging on wealth and income inequality, wellbeing, and economic growth and redistribution. Previously, he worked as a Research Associate for the Retirement Equity Lab. He received his MA in economics and business from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and Corvinus University of Budapest.

My discussion with Teresa and Sia clearly states some of the ugly truths on how older workers have been hurt during the pandemic. They acknowledge the elephant in the room that ageism in the job market is alive and well. This is an employer issue that only employers can fix.

This week I am speaking with Kerry Hannon and she has written a new book called In Control at 50+: How to Succeed in the New World of Work.

Here is a snippet from the Amazon page:

Anyone who began working 20 or 30 years ago has witnessed astonishing changes in the workplace during their career. When the global pandemic hit, older workers fortunate enough to retain their jobs once again had to navigate enormous upheaval, virtually overnight. Working from home, often in isolation, over-fifties found themselves facing daunting technological and social challenges.

If this scenario is all too familiar, In Control at 50+ shows how to make the new normal work for you. Kerry Hannon, a workplace futurist and renowned expert on business, careers, and personal finance combines all her insights and skills to help you actively shape your work future into what you want it to be.

This week I am speaking with Deb Livingston, domain lead in the health and wellness, cooking, food, and nutrition areas for GetSetUp. Deb made this leap only with her passion for healthy food and no formal credentials.

Deb had a pretty traditional business background but when her mother became ill, she took a break to be with her mother in her final years. Deb joined the Career Pivot community and through a bit of serendipity, she found GetSetup and became a contract guide.  This led her down a path that she could not have imagined.

She has since guided quite a few Career Pivot community members to become GetSetup guides in both full and part-time roles.

I had the GetSetUp CEO on the podcast in episode 242 called, GetSetUp is the Fastest Growing Online Learning Community of Older Adults.

I also had Vicki Soll on the podcast in episode 260 called, Vicki Soll Finds a Happy Place in Her Career by Teaching Older Adults. Teaching part-time for GetSetUp led her down a new path that she did not expect.

Description:

This week I have an interesting discussion with Ian Sanders, author of 365 ways to have a good day, a book I found thoroughly enjoyable, and more importantly, actionable and a time of disruption.

I was first approached by Ian's publicist and I requested a copy of the book. As usual, I procrastinated. Reading the book, it may surprise some of you but I grew up with a learning disability and I could barely read when I graduated from high school. I overcame that. But I still don't like to read. I was then approached by Karen Wickre, who I interviewed a couple of weeks ago in Episode 261, that I should have Ian on the podcast. That was a kick in the butt to read the book and get him scheduled. Ian and I share a lot of similar concepts and ideas when it comes to how to live our lives. I thought, in theses strange times, this would be a great topic to bring you.

His short bio is as a follows:

Ian Sanders is an author, creative consultant and storyteller who works with some of the world's leading organizations. Throughout his professional life, Ian has experimented with life enhancing habits and

hacks. It's resulted in two decades worth of conversations, detours and journaling. And now whether it's working with teams and global organizations, or the founders who are just getting started, Ian aims to spark change with his fifth book 365 ways to have a good day, he hopes to inspire people to spark change in their own lives. And get more out of every day. Ian lives in lead on the sea, England.

scription:

This week I am speaking with Debbie Schnur who is a Career Pivot community member. She has quite a story to tell of progressively connecting the dots to find her happy spot.

Debbie left her career as a mechanical engineer in the middle part of the last decade to get a master's degree in public health. She then moved halfway across the country to make a series of pivots to become a master gardener, an expert in composting, and is teaching kids about healthy foods.

What I like about Debbie’s story is for every pivot she has made, she built her network and connected the dots to get to the next pivot. As she made each pivot, she did not know which dot she would need to connect to next. She just kept moving forward and more importantly followed her heart. This is something she never did in her engineering career.

Description:

This week I am speaking with Karen Wickre, author of Taking the Work Out of Networking: An Introvert's Guide to Making Connections That Count and we are going to talk about networking in this new post-pandemic world.

I had Karen on the podcast way back in February of 2019 in episode 114 and that episode was called An Introvert’s Guide to Making Connections That Count

Here is her bio:

Karen is a veteran connector, editor, and communicator, and has worked in and around Silicon Valley long enough to have appeared in WIRED 1.4. (Even before that, she wrote one of the very first guides to what we used to call “the World Wide Web,” and now it’s an amusing relic of a more innocent time.) As a corporate writer, she developed stories, styles, and cadence for Google, Twitter, and many startups. As an early Googler (she joined when there were 500 employees; she left nine years later when there were 50,000), She has been in a fair share of war rooms and fire drills, and have crafted scores of posts covering products and pivots, shakeups, corporate apologies, and company culture. More recently she advised a range of companies that want a strategy (or a reality check) on their messages and the content they produce.

Sometimes friends introduce her as someone who “knows everybody.” Of course, that’s not true, but usually, she does know who everyone is. That may be her secret power, along with common sense: she can see around corners, ask questions that matter, all in order to help get to the next steps and real solutions for teams, companies, and individuals.

It appears that in-person events are coming back. I am scheduled to speak at the Texpo Treasury and Financial conference in Austin Texas in late April. South by Southwest kicks off before this episode will publish. I thought this would be a good time to discuss networking in this new world as I expect many of you are out of practice and have a bit of anxiety about getting back out there.

Description:

This week I am speaking with a graduate from the Career Pivot community, Vicki Soll. Vicki wandered around a lot in her career in the high-tech industry. She did okay but was never really happy. Vicki has found her happy place in her early 60s teaching, training, and developing curriculum targeting older adults.

I think many of you will relate to her story as she kept taking jobs throughout her career that she knew were not right for her because she wanted the paycheck. What we do not mention Vicki married later in life, and therefore, for most of her career, she was completely dependent on her own income. I cannot tell you the number of highly successful single women in their 50s who I have coached who have this underlying fear of becoming a bag lady, alone and homeless. Making career decisions based on fear of running out of money is not uncommon in this demographic.

Vicki has found her happy spot in her career and it has been my real joy watching her shift her mindset over about 3 years.

Description:

This week, I will interview Mark Miller, that is MARK Miller of the Retirement Revised newsletter and podcast. Mark is a good friend and colleague, writes for the New York Times and many other major outlets.

I am a subscriber to Mark’s newsletter and podcast. His most recent newsletter included a PBS News Hour segment Why millions of older Americans are retiring early in the wake of the pandemic.

I will embed the video in the full show notes linked below. I found this a pretty compelling piece on why so many are retiring but I am concerned will they be able to stay retired or will they have to unretire. If they need to return to the work after 2, 3, or more years what might that look like?

I wanted to discuss this with someone who really understands this arena and could dig deeper into how this will affect those of us in the 2nd half of life who are not retiring just yet.

This week I am speaking with one of my favorite people, Diann Wingert and we will be discussing How to Create Success by Outsmarting Your Brain. I have had Diann on the podcast twice before in episodes #204 and #214 to discuss mindsets. I strongly suggest you listen to those episodes.

I was listening to one of Diann’s episodes from her Driven Woman podcast called Make Success a No Brainer and said to myself I need to have Diann on to discuss this topic. It basically comes down to the fact that your brain is built to keep you alive and safe. When you are trying something new or live in uncertain times, which we sure are living in, then your brain is not your friend. It will hold you back to keep you safe and alive. I think you will find this an interesting conversation.

This week I am speaking with Joanne Kaminski, owner of OnlineTutorCoach.com and she helps tutors start, and grow their online tutoring businesses.

Here is her bio from her website:

Joanne Kaminski is a former teacher and Reading Specialist with 10 years of experience turned online reading tutor.  She is the founder of the Online Tutor Coach, LLC where she helps other tutors who are great at tutoring but struggle with attracting students.  Joanne impacts over 20,000 tutors through her YouTube channel, Facebook Group, Instagram, and podcast.  She is the author of How to Start an Online Tutoring Business Making 4-5 Figures a Month which is available on Amazon.

When I was teaching high school math, I was approached by a lot of people that this was something they would like to do as an encore career. Becoming a teacher is a really hard transition. If you are interested in this go listen to episode 227 which was called Teaching High School Chemistry as an Encore Career with Keith Stolzenbach

Becoming an online tutor is much easier and equally as rewarding.

In those roles, she was accountable for developing and retaining talent, building managers and teams, and growing a healthy bottom line. She also innovated and led an internal coaching program supporting high potential associates and high revenue teams.

Darcy reached out to me about being on the podcast and offered me a copy of the book. After reading the book I thought this would be an ideal discussion to have in these crazy times. I found the book very actionable in helping people get their heads on straight.

Description:

This week I am bringing back Thom Singer to the podcast. I have known Thom for well over a decade and I first had him on back in 2017 to discuss his pivot from business development for law firms to becoming a full time public speaker and master of ceremonies primarily for associations.

When the pandemic started Thom’s business completely shut down and I had him on in episode 185 to discuss how he was coping. I later brought him back for episode 213 in July of 2021 to get an update.

Thom recorded an end-of-year episode for his own podcast called What I Learned the Last Two Years. I was so impressed with that episode I wanted to bring Thom back on to discuss what he has had to do to adapt his business and more importantly what he has done to maintain his own mental health and happiness.

Before we go any further let me mention I have a new sponsor MagicMind. Magic Mind is the world’s first productivity drink. This week I want to take you through the process we went through in buying a house in Mexico. The first thing I want you to understand the process is very similar to purchasing in the United States but … what you are buying is different.

In all of my travels around the world in my career, people build houses from materials that are readily available. In the US houses are built from wood. In Mexico, they are built from brick and concrete. The brick and concrete in Mexico are similar to what is available in the US but different. Therefore, houses in Mexico are built and not architected. I will explain more about this later.

Before we go any further let me mention I have a new sponsor - Magic Mind. Magic Mind is the world’s first productivity drink. It is not an energy or coffee-based drink but a drink that will help you stay focused. I have been using it for several months it has made a real difference but more on this later in the show.

This week I have a very different kind of episode. I am talking with Sal Hanna who is a recruiter for the Milton Hershey School.

Let me read you’re a snippet from their website:

Milton Hershey School is a cost-free, private school for boys and girls in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Milton and Catherine Hershey founded the school in 1909 with money they earned from the chocolate company. Since then, the lives of more than 10,000 children from working-class families with lower income have been transformed through high-quality education and structured home life.

As some of my long-time listeners know I took time out of my career to teach high school math at an inner-city high school in Austin Texas. I did this in my late 40s and I was often approached by people saying they wanted to do what I was doing when they retired.

Sal does not recruit teachers but he does for house parents. I want you to listen to our discussion and let me know your thoughts.

This week I will be discussing the latest trends in interviewing with Alex Freund, The Landing Expert. I have known Alex for almost 10 years. He is one of the most respected coaches when it comes to interviewing skills and, more importantly, he is an expert on video interviews.

Given that almost all interviewing has gone remote and with the rise of the dreaded interview with the bot, I thought now would be a good time to discuss the changes that have occurred.
