Description:

This week I am bringing back Thom Singer to the podcast. I have known Thom for well over a decade and I first had him on back in 2017 to discuss his pivot from business development for law firms to becoming a full time public speaker and master of ceremonies primarily for associations.

When the pandemic started Thom’s business completely shut down and I had him on in episode 185 to discuss how he was coping. I later brought him back for episode 213 in July of 2021 to get an update.

Thom recorded an end-of-year episode for his own podcast called What I Learned the Last Two Years. I was so impressed with that episode I wanted to bring Thom back on to discuss what he has had to do to adapt his business and more importantly what he has done to maintain his own mental health and happiness.

Before we go any further let me mention I have a new sponsor MagicMind. Magic Mind is the world’s first productivity drink. It is not an energy or coffee-based drink but a drink that will help you stay focused. I have been using it for several months it has made a real difference but more on this later in the show.

This week I want to take you through the process we went through in buying a house in Mexico. The first thing I want you to understand the process is very similar to purchasing in the United States but … what you are buying is different.

In all of my travels around the world in my career, people build houses from materials that are readily available. In the US houses are built from wood. In Mexico, they are built from brick and concrete. The brick and concrete in Mexico are similar to what is available in the US but different. Therefore, houses in Mexico are built and not architected. I will explain more about this later.

Before we go any further let me mention I have a new sponsor - Magic Mind. Magic Mind is the world’s first productivity drink. It is not an energy or coffee-based drink but a drink that will help you stay focused. I have been using it for several months it has made a real difference but more on this later in the show.

You can get a 20% discount by going to Magicmind.co/repurpose and using the discount code repurpose20.

Let's discuss purchasing a house in Ajijic, Mexico.

This week I have a very different kind of episode. I am talking with Sal Hanna who is a recruiter for the Milton Hershey School.

Let me read you’re a snippet from their website:

Milton Hershey School is a cost-free, private school for boys and girls in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Milton and Catherine Hershey founded the school in 1909 with money they earned from the chocolate company. Since then, the lives of more than 10,000 children from working-class families with lower income have been transformed through high-quality education and structured home life.

As some of my long-time listeners know I took time out of my career to teach high school math at an inner-city high school in Austin Texas. I did this in my late 40s and I was often approached by people saying they wanted to do what I was doing when they retired.

Sal does not recruit teachers but he does for house parents. I want you to listen to our discussion and let me know your thoughts.

This week I will be discussing the latest trends in interviewing with Alex Freund, The Landing Expert. I have known Alex for almost 10 years. He is one of the most respected coaches when it comes to interviewing skills and, more importantly, he is an expert on video interviews.

Given that almost all interviewing has gone remote and with the rise of the dreaded interview with the bot, I thought now would be a good time to discuss the changes that have occurred.

Description:

This is the first episode of 2022 and I thought we would start with a 2022 Career Reality Check-In for the 50+ Crowd with John Tarnoff. Last year, we recorded a similar episode and it was the most downloaded new episode for the year.

I have had John on the podcast in episodes 232, 208, 152, and 120. John has been the most frequent guest on the podcast in the 5+ years I have been producing this podcast.

I consider John Tarnoff to be a peer, colleague, and friend. John specializes in helping those in the 2nd half of life reinvent themselves. In 2017, he published his book, Boomer Reinvention: How to Create Your Dream Career.

The following is a snippet from his website.

After my startup went bust, I decided to go back to school to earn a Master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology – a branch of behavioral psychology that focuses on self-responsibility and self-forgiveness as pathways to healing and change. I didn’t think that I wanted to become a psychologist but I hoped to learn more about myself, what my strengths and weaknesses were, and what lessons I needed to learn to move forward.

Now, fifteen years later, as a career coach, author, and speaker, my mission is to support professionals over fifty to redefine, build and sustain second-act careers beyond traditional retirement. I’ve created a more personal-growth approach to career development, vs the traditional HR skills-based paradigm – starting with the notion that your ideal second-act career is already inside you.
